Talk to Pediatrician on Diarrhea, Weight Loss

person-avatar

Asking for Other, Male, 2 years old, Swat

My son is two years old. He had diarrhea for around 4-5 months. Since he travelled from Saudi Arabia to Pakistan, we thought it would be due to changes in the surroundings. We tried to changed his formula milk to Lactose Free in doubt that he might be lactose intorlent. His stomac is bloated and swollen like a ball. We used several kind of precsribed medicine but no effect recently we visited a doctor and he asked for some tests. I have attached the tests results. Kindly advice what is the problem and how it will be cured.

It seems like your baby is sensitive to products containing gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and triticale). Patients sensitive to these cannot digest food properly, loses their weight, abdomen become distended, and they develop chronic diarrhoea (more than 21 days). We also call this “celiac disease, celic sprue or gluten-sensitive enteropathy. Apart from this your baby might be deficient in IgA antibodies. Thus, we do other tests sometimes like EMA sometimes. All those tests (including the one you have done already) are performed when the child is on gluten diet for at least 6 weeks to be certain about the results. This condition is further investigated by Paediatric Gastroenterologist by Endoscopy and biopsy of the part of intestine to confirm the diagnosis. What you can do now is either give your child food that do not contain gluten in it (gluten-free diet) for life long, but if the condition doesn’t improve (no weight gain, no resolution of diarrhoea, no change in distended abdominal shape), then consult Paeds Gastroenterologist for further evaluation and treatment. I am sharing a link with you, read this to have a little more understanding related to the disease: https://hospitals.aku.edu/pakistan/patients-families/Documents/Gluten%20Free%20Diet%20in%20Celiac%20Disease%20(Urdu).pdf
