Asking For Father, Male 55, karachi

My father is diagnosed a type 2 diabetic. From one and a half month. His fasting blood sugar is less than 110 and at night its 115 to 120 MashAllah all his tests are good. He is active. Initially his blood sugar was 400 and he was taking 3 medications but now Doctor Prescribed him EMPAA M. And GLUCOPHAGE 500. But he says he doesn't feel good after talking metformin. So we went to another doctor who said him to leave glucophage 500 at night and only take EMPAA M. He feels more hungry now. Alhamdulillah blood sugar is fine. And from one month I was checking his blood sugar daily two times. But now how often should I check? Please guide. Should I force him to take glucophage? Or is there any other alternative?

if blood sugar is ok widout glucophage then no need of it.and u should check it once a day on alternative days

General Practitioner in Faisalabad - Dr. Suleman

General Practitioner in Sheikhupura - Dr. M Shahid Rasheed Sulehri

As tab. Empaa M already contains metform.. You didn't have to take glucophage. As your father have good control of Blood sugar. U can check his blood sugar on alternate days or make blood sugar chart to check blood sugar once daily and then consult Physician. Here you didn't show that in how much dosage of Empaa M he is taking??

good question
1) for diabetics on tablets, it is enough to check blood sugar once a week as follows:
1st week: fasting
2nd week 2 hours after breakfast
3rd week 15 minutes before dinner
4th week 2 hours after the heaviest meal of the day (if the heaviest meal of the day is breakfast, no need to do this extra 4th week sigar)
2) check serum creatinine at least once a year and urine for microalbuminuria at least once a year.
3) empaa M should have glucophage (metformin) already in it. if his sugars are in range only with empaa M, no need to force more glucophahe down.
4) for further advice, please take online appointment.

please note that checking blood sugar daily or several times per day is only for patients on insulin.
no diabetes guidelines in the world recommend daily or alternate day sugar checks for diabetics on tablets.

Empa M already has metformin/glucophage in it. If his blood sugars are normal, no need to add Glucophage.
