Asking for Self, Female, 26 years old, Karachi
My child’s pediatrician has told me to stop giving formula milk to my 4 month old baby boy immediately. She says that WHO has banned all kinds of infant formulas and that they are banned in all major countries as well. Wanted to know is it true as my baby doesn’t get full with breastfeed only.
She's right about WHO recommendations. Mother's milk is the Best. If baby is well and gaining weight appropriately no need to introduce formula milk. If he's under weight you can start early weaning with semi solid foods with banana, yogurt, rice along with mother's milk.
exclusive breast feeding for 1st 6months is the recommendation... there is no harm in stopping formula feed if baby is gaining weight and taking feed properly.
WHO do recommend exclusive breastfeeding for six months but say that infants who are not breast fed need a suitable breast milk substitute, for example, infant formula. They issued specific guidelines on preparation and storage of infant formula which can be downloaded from the web. However, it is believed that a mother who is willing to exclusively breast feed can produce enough milk if she is relaxed and feeds her infant frequently and keeps herself hydrated and adequately nourished. The WHO and American Academy of Paediatrics advise against starting solid foods below six months due to fear of developing food allergies.
