Talk to Pediatrician on Baby Refusing Milk

person-avatar

Asking for Other, Male, 1 years old, Islamabad

My 3 months old is refusing both breastfead and formula since few days. He hardly takes 5,6 Oz milk in whole day. What can be the reason and how should I make him take more milk?? I have changes his nipple too, he latches properly but suddenly after 3,4 seconds he spits the milk out. His diaper count is also decreased. Overall he's not being fussy, cranky or restless. Is there anything to improve his appetite??

Do you mean by his refusal his spitting out of the milk? I got this impression because you wrote he latches on properly. If that is the case he may have less tight junction between his stomach and the gullet or food pipe, a condition called gastro-oesophageal reflux as he is otherwise well. If he had not been latching on, this could have been due to some local problems in the mouth such as an infection caused by a fungus - commonly called oral thrush. If former is the case feed the baby with head raised and burp him by putting on your shoulder. After that make him lie down with his head raised by putting some support under his head and shoulders. He might also need some medicine to help him. In oral thrush there is a curd like material on the tongue and inner sides of cheeks and hard palate. That needs use of a medicine against fungus in the form of drops.

Is there such material on inner side of cheeks and palate, too? If it is only on the tongue it could just be milk stains.

Use Nilstat Solution which contains nystatin. The dose is one ml dropper every six hours for 7 days. Empty half dropper in each side of mouth.

Doctor, in extreme hunger he takes the milk, otherwise he keeps on moving nipple here and there with tongue. He is also completely refusing breastfead. I have changed his milk from bf1 to Similac total comfort.
