Did the infant have any high grade fever? Was any chest X-ray done? Recurrent pneumonia may either be due to an underlying inborn defect of lungs or windpipe or a deficiency in ability to fight infections (immune deficiency). Most respiratory infections with runny nose and cough without significant fever are viral in origin and do not warrant use of antibiotics.

Antibiotics are not effective against viruses. Some supportive treatments may be needed such as use of Normal Saline nose drops or use a of bulb sucker to clear the nose and throat but anti-allergy syrups and drops are avoided below 2 years. Cough syrups are prohibited even up to 6 years of age.

Cough is a protective phenomenon and helps in getting rid of phlegm and germs. It should not be suppressed. Its cause should be treated. For example if it is due to bacterial pneumonia, antibiotics are required. If it is due to narrowing of breathing tubes as in Asthma Inhalers may be needed.
