Asking For Someone else, Father, Male, 61 Years old, Lahore
My father is a diabetic patient and smokes Benson cigarettes. He is also taking some Anti Depressents as part of a treatment. I am worried about his general health. Whats test(s) should I get done for him? He is already seeking a Endocrinologist, A psychiatrist. Sugar remains under control. He is taking Dibetone + Glucerna on daily basis. Recently he has lost weight but now he is stable. I am mainly looking for advice due to his smoking habbits. Should i get a Lung Cancer screening done? Also for general well being if some tests and vaccinations could be recommended for his age.

Hello, you father seems to be healthy since you did not mention any symptoms and his diabetes is under control. He should be counseled about smoking especially more so during this pandemic as COVID 19 symptoms are more severe in smokers. You should get basic blood tests done, lipid profile, Liver function test, Renal function test. The lung cancer screening should also be done. Diabetes and smoking individually are harmful but together their damage is much more and faster. Get the patient counselled on quitting smoking and meanwhile get the following tests done:
-HbA1c
-serum cholesterol
-RFTSs
-urine complete
and get a foot exam done next time he sees a doctor.

For lung cancer screening,low dose chest CT is recommended for consecutive 3 years . It’s better you get this done. Since he is diabetic so other tests must have been done already. You can share those tests here. As for vaccination , pneumococcal vaccine is recommended after age 65. Check does he have any pneumococcal vaccine done in young age ?
