Asking for Other, Female, 52 years old, Islamabad

Aoa. My aunt has a difficulty walking and has arthritis since last 10 15 years or so. Now the regular doctor is insisting on knee replacement and another doctor says no need for that. She is too worried what to do. And kindly tell for how long knee lasts after surgery? Doc says 10 years after she has to undergo operation again? Kindly guide.

Yes , that is true . Don’t go for knee replacement surgery. Physiotherapy & few exercises might help .

Hello..!! Well, if her condition is not responding to the medication and is further deteriorating and making her immobile, then we can opt for surgery.. But if she is coping up with it with the help of medicines, then we can wait. But as she's having gross degenerative changes in both knees, the medicines can only be given for symptomatic treatment and these changes aren't reversible with any medicine.

WAS
There are severe degenerative changes in the X-ray, you can yourself see there is no space in the bones. So, ideally knee replacement should be done.
Now a days knee replacement surgery has become very successful and there are excellent results. However, its patients choice to decide he wants to opt surgery or medical treatment.
With medical treatment quality of life will remain affected as she will continuously have reduced movement, pain, anxiety. Also, pain killers and steroids are main stay of treatment which have their own side effects.

Findings on xray suggest advanced degenerative changes. Knee replacement is the treatment of choice if medical therapy is not responding well.
