Asking For Brother, Male 22, toba Tek Singh
Aoa my brother has a eye condition, previously he has been getting the treatment for conjunctivitis for the past many years, now a doctor has diagnosed him with dry eye.... ANA is done and the titre is 1:320 suggesting Sjogren's , RA factor is negative.... our main concern, right now is dry eye bcz his vision is deteriorating..... now the doctor has prescribed amniotic membrane insertion.... can anyone plz guide me regarding the prognosis especially the visual acuity and inns and outs of procedure Thanks
An Amniotic membrane transplant is, as the name suggests, involves taking a
part of the placenta and transplanting it on top of the eye. It acts like a
healing tissue and usually withers away on its own in a about a couple of
weeks. It does have its utility, but its effect will not be permanent if
your brother has diagnosed sjogren's.
However more acceptable options for managing sjorgren's dry eye include:
a) use of tear replacement drops
b) use of Cyclosporin eye drops
c) punctal plugs
d) pilocarpine tablets
e) Autologus serum (serum from patient's blood, centrifuged and converted
to eye drops)
You can talk to your doctor about these options and decide on a course of
action mutually acceptable
Patient will be needing artificial tears and with time other things to manage dry eye.
