With experienced surgeons thyroidectomy generally goes without any major complication.

What is the indication of total thyroidectomy?, if it is for a “cold” thyroid nodule, and FNAC is negative for any cancer, and no huge goiter ( no compression )- then surgery is not needed, as long as it can be followed by an Endocrinologist. With regard to your question of complications, it really depends on the experience of surgeon, if surgeon is doing multiple similar surgeries daily/weekly, then minimal complications- and surgeon should brief you about risks ( such as bleeding, vocal cord paralysis etc)Hope it helps.
